Have you ever encountered a danger that could totally threaten your life? What would you do if a fierce Bengal tiger is right in front of you? The movie Life of Pi is about a story of a young Indian boy who is adventurous and strong. Also, this movie is a story of our life. When this young Indian boy shows his fear and weakness, we see ourselves who are sometimes powerless and abandoned. Through this movie, I bet you'll be touched by the powerful story and charming characters of this movie. This review is going to be divided into five parts, namely charcters, plot, background, thesis of this movie and conclusion.
1. Characters
Suraj Sharma stars as Piscine Molitor Patel, or Pi. He is an Indian boy whose father owes a zoo in ondicherry. One day his father decides to move to Canada and he brings all his animals with him. However,during a voyage to North America, the ship sinks and among Pi's family members, only Pi survives. After this tremendous disaster, Pi starts his long journey on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.
Richard Parker is a Bengal tiger which lived in a zoo that Pi's father owed. This tiger gets on a lifeboat with Pi and learns how to coexist with him. The tiger in this movie is made using computer graphic programs.
2. Plot
A young boy named Pi is an ordinary 16-year-old Indian boy who fell in love with various religions. He and his family members live in Pondicherry, and Pi's father owes a zoo. One day, Pi's father sells the zoo animals and move to Canada with his family to ensure a good future to his sons. During the voyage to North America, the ship sinks and only Pi survives among the passangers.
After being left alone in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Pi recognizes four animals that were on a boat. They were spotted hyena, orangutan, an injured zebra and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. After the hyena kills the zebra and orangutan, Richard Parker kills the hyena; Pi survives through this and he tries to coexist with the tiger. He learns how to catch a fish or how to make water from the ocean into pure water. He trains the tiger not to cross his area and not to attack him by using the carrot-and-stick approach. After that trainig, several crisis for Pi comes but he overcomes them while he is on the ocean.
However, when the boat reaches land, Pi finds out that he arrived to a mysterious island which is full of green plants. He enjoys the beauty and abundance of this island until he finds out the island's horrendous truth. What is the secret of this island? If you are curious about the later story, you should go to watch this movie!
3. Background
The novel is a work of fiction set in the summer of 1977 describes several places and historical facts in India. The Patel household's discussions of the political situation refer to historical events, and Pondicherry is a former French colony in India.
4. Thesis
This movie is about our life. In this movie, Pi says that we have to move on to the next stage though we want to let everything down and give up. This movie tells us to deal with some threats in our lives; we sometimes need a threat like Richard Parker. Pi says that he could survive because of this tiger. The serious danger right in front of him made him tense, to be alarmed and to be smarter. We all have our difficulties like Richard Parker, and this movie tells us to deal with them bravely like Pi.
5. Conclusion
This movie is such a wonderful, inspring movie to people. You may not bring your young little baby cousins if you want to enjoy the movie and share your feelings with others, since this is a movie for adults. You need to be mature to understand the whole meaning of this movie. Also, I strongly recommend you to watch this movie with 3D in the theater. You'll never forget the beauty of the scenery in this movie.
